Long Beach State will officially allow the sale of alcohol at Walter Pyramid once again. Beverages to be sold are beer and wine following a change from the California State University that is removing their prior ban on the sale and service of alcoholic beverages at intercollegiate athletic events.

The Executive Order 1109 was issued on June 30, 2017, which now allows the 23 California State University campuses to reinstate their alcohol sales for on-campus venues. Not all colleges have to reinstate the order but it is now an option as a result of an examination of the practices of a number of other higher education institutions.

The last time that Walter Pyramid, the home of the volleyball program, sold alcoholic beverages was in 2005. The Executive Order 966 banned beer and wine be sold at on-campus events. Though, the order could not reach facilities that were technically off-campus, including Blair Field.

Starting on October 27, the sale of alcoholic beverages will begin as the women’s volleyball squad hosts UC Davis and will continue for the remainder of the season and into the men’s season. This will also include men’s and women’s basketball events as they take place in Walter Pyramid.

“We want to do this in a safe environment for our fans and families,” said Athletics Director Andy Fee. “Our fans and supporters are important to our success and this change is the first of several we will be implementing over the next year.”

The main goal of allowing alcoholic beverages is to allow Long Beach State fans the same amenities that they are offered at events like a Dodgers or Lakers game.

The school is still looking into the possibility of alcohol sales at other ticketed events on campus including – George Allen Field, the LBSU Softball Complex, the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Complex and Jack Rose Track.
