After 14 seasons with Cheyenne Mountain, David Barkley has announced his resignation following this past season. In his tenure with the Indians, Barley has accomplished a number of things with his team, including five straight Colorado 4A state championships and six overall, 14 regional titles, 350 wins and a .858 winning percentage.

Barkley had a strong Division I coaching rep coming into the program, coaching at Villanova and as an assistant with George Washington. He used his coaching knowledge to turn Cheyenne Mountain into a stronghold in Colorado.

While with the Indians, Barley had the opportunity to coach his three daughters through the program, with all three winning at least one title.

Barley moved to Colorado from Ohio, beginning his teaching career with Cheyenne Mountain in 2001, with the team having a low volleyball tradition program. Picking up the team in 2004, Barkley quickly turned things around for the program, qualifying for state in his first season. By 2007, the Indians were closing in on the finals, losing to Mountain View that season.

Starting in 2008, the Indians claimed five straight state titles, with just one set loss in 2012 to Lewis-Palmer. They took home their sixth state title in 2015 with a sweep over Lewis-Palmer.

In Barkley’s final season with the team, he had just three seniors and one returning starter from the previous season. This, however, did not stop the team from qualifying for the state tournament for the 14th straight season.
