The Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) has announced the Players of the Week for the period ending March 19. Grand Canyon’s Cullen Mosher and Fort Wayne’s Nick Smalter were named Co-Offensive Players of the Week while Lewis freshman outside hitter Ryan Coenen was named the Defensive Player of the Week.

Mosher earns the Offensive honor for a second straight week. On the week, he averaged 4.00 kills per set on a .344 attack percentage in a pair of wins. In Grand Canyon’s 3-2 win over Fort Wayne he hit .412 with 27 kills (5.40 per set). He had five kills in the decisive fifth set.

Smalter put up near identical numbers to Mosther’s on the week. Smalter averaged 3.88 kills per set with a .383 attack percentage mark while adding two aces and two assists. In Saturday’s contest he hit .451 with 29 kills, the most by a MIVA player in a match this season. Smalter turned away three Grand Canyon match points with kills before the Mastodons fell 19-17 in the fifth set.

Coenen helped Lewis to a win over McKendree and a 3-2 loss to MIVA-leader Ohio State last week. He averaged 1.50 blocks per set and 1.13 digs per set. Against McKendree he recorded four blocks (two solo) and four digs. He returned two days later to put up eight blocks (one solo) and five digs against the Buckeyes. He helped Lewis limit Ohio State to a .266 attack percentage in the match, becoming the first MIVA team to hold the Buckeyes to a sub .300 mark in a match this year.
