The opening rounds the Rio Open’s unique pool-play format took place on Friday, with 8 teams advancing to Saturday’s quarterfinal matches.
Women’s Draw
The Olympic champions Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst, in their first World Tour event since Ludwig’s shoulder surgery, have advanced to the quarterfinals thanks to a win in the round of 16 over Ukrainians Davidova/Shchypkova 2-0 (21-13, 21-17). They went 2-0 in pool play on Thursday, which gave them a bye to the round of 32.
They’ll face off with 2016 Canadian Olympian Sarah Pavan and her new partner Melissa Humana-Paredes. Pavan as an individual is 5-5 versus Ludwig and Walkenhorst, though in all of those tournaments she was playing with her former partner Heather Bansley (who lost on Friday in the round of 16).
Also advancing were three Brazilian pairs: Barbara/Fernanda will play Larissa/Talita in the last quarterfinal of the day, while Agatha/Duda will face off against the American collegiate champions Kelly Claes/Sara Hughes. Claes and Hughes pulled off a narrow 2-1 (10-21, 21-18, 15-9) upset Brazil’s Elize Maia/Taiana Lima. The Americans came back from a lopsided opening set to take the last two and advance to the quarterfinals. They were the only American duo to get even as far as the round of 16, let alone the round of 8.
The 4 quarterfinal matchups:
- Ludwig/Walkenhorst (Germany) vs. Pavan/Humana-Paredes (Canada)
- Laboureur/Sude (Germany) vs. Hermannova/Slukova (Czech Republic)
- Agatha/Duda (Brazil) vs. Claes/Hughes (USA)
- Barbara/Fernanda (Brazil) vs. Larissa/Talita (Brazil)
