Marquette and Baylor Start Their Seasons With Wins

The #24 Marquette Golden Eagles pulled off the sweep over the Texas State Bobcats in the Baylor Invitational on Friday afternoon in Waco, Texas. This is the fifth straight season that Marquette has won its season opener.

The Golden Eagles led in kills (56-33), assists (53-33) and aces (3-2), but were outdone in blocks (5-3). Marquette hit .368 on the night and held Texas State to .221.

Hope Werch led the Golden Eagles to the sweep with 13 kills on 23 swings with two errors for a .478 hitting clip, while Allie Barber added in another 12 kills on 31 swings with three errors to end the night with a .290 hitting performance. Jenna Rosenthal made a strong start to the season with 10 kills and one error, hitting .529 while Elizabeth Orf took the court with 10 kills and a .438 clip.

Lauren Speckman produced 32 assists and seven digs while Martha Konovodoff picked up 22 digs.

For the Bobcats, Megan Porterrecorded 11 kills and Cheyenne Huskey put down eight kills while Brooke Johnson picked up a team-best eight digs.

It was an interesting match for the LSU Tigers and Baylor Bears, as two of the four matches had 10+ point separations, but Baylor pulled away with the win in four sets on Friday night in the Baylor Invitational. The teams are now 5-5 in program history when facing each other.

The Bears outplayed the Tigers in almost every category – kills (48-39), hitting percentage (.182-.176), assists (44-35), and digs (56-40).

Shelly Fanning was the star of the match for Baylor as she put down 15 kills and 5 digs along with 3 blocks on the night. Pressley Yossiana posted 14 kills and eight digs while Braya Hunt dished out 20 assists and 12 digs for a double-double. In the backcourt, Tara Wulf picked up 11 digs.

For LSU, Taylor Bannister put down 11 kills on a .161 hitting clip while Toni Rodriguez added nine kills. In the back row, Raigen Cianciulli picked up a team-best 10 digs while Toni Rodriguez and Leigh Maher each added another seven.
