Michigan State volleyball played host to Maryland on Friday night, however, it was the team’s off-court activities that night which seek to make a lasting impact.

The Spartans hosted a Children’s Cancer Awareness Night, collecting art supplies for the Sparrow Hospital Pediatric Playroom. Cash donations also were accepted.  Children’s cancer patients and survivors also performed an honorary first serve before the match.

Michigan State also supported another cause near and dear to Spartan fans, by wearing Lacey’s Lacey during the match. Lacey’s Laces, which can be purchased at retailers throughout the country, support the American Cancer Society, Coaches vs. Cancer and Princess Lacey’s Legacy, to continue the fight against pediatric cancer.

Lacey’s Laces are named for Michigan State fan Lacey Holsworth, who developed a close relationship with former Spartans men’s basketball player Adreian Payne, which was highly publicized during the 2013-14 basketball season. Princess Lacey, as she was affectionately known, succumbed to neuroblastoma, a fetal-nerve cell cancer, on April 9, 2014.
