Mountain Brook Downs Hoover To Take Alabama 7A Title

The 46th Alabama High School Athletic Association Volleyball State Championships concluded Oct. 27. The championships were played at the Bill Harris Arena in CrossPlex, Alabama.

To take the 7A State Championship, Mountain Brook downed Hoover, 3-1. The Lady Spartans, under Coach Haven O’Quinn, have taken the title all three years since the 7A classification was instituted in 2014.

Senior Emily Kilgore offered up a big performance for the squad to record a double-double with 15 kills and 13 digs, adding three service aces to her tally. Her strong performance earned her the tournament’s MVP title. Teammates Caroline Davies added 10 kills, Lacey Jeffcoat picked up 25 digs and setter Libby Grace Gann recorded a double-double with 40 assists and 10 digs.

Hazel Green took down the defending state champions Spanish Fort in three sets for the 6A title to end a 22 year drought. Senior Brook Sanford recorded a double-double in her final match with 14 kills and 16 digs, earning her tournament MVP in 6A for Hazel Green. Setter Lauren Lasater handed out 45 assists and 12 digs for a double-double.

In the 5A division, St. Paul’s Episcopal swept Alexandria to take the school’s 16th state championship. 5A’s MVP was awarded to Parker Canada of St. Paul’s as she posted a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs.

Madison Academy defeated Saint James in three to take the 4A state championship title. Madison Academy got strong performances from Macy Moore and Abby Brooks, who had 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Brooks also picked up 13 digs for a double-double and the 4A tournament MVP. In the back row, Erin Eisenhart picked up a match-best 24 digs.

Leading Bayside Academy to a 3-0 victory over Providence Christian in the 3A title match was senior Ariel Dulaney. Dulaney put down 14 kills, seven digs and four aces, earning her the 3A tournament MVP award. She recorded the 1,500th kill of her high school career in the match.

St. Luke’s Episcopal claimed their first ever 2A state title with a 3-0 sweep over Winston County. Earning MVP honors was senior Elizabeth Thompson who put down nine kills and five blocks. Kellan Hensley picked up 21 digs for St. Luke’s.

In a hard fought five set battle, Addison came away with the victory over Decatur Heritage for the 1A state championship. Earning MVP honors was Abbie Chambless with a double-double of 20 kills and 35 digs. Earning a double-double was setter Cecilee Gaiter with 39 assists and 19 digs, while Maison Evans picked up 31 digs.
