CORVALLIS, Ore. – A balanced offensive attack, with five players posting nine or more kills, lifted No. 19 UCLA to a sweep of Oregon State on Wednesday.
Sophomore middle blocker Madeleine Gates (13), senior outside hitter Reily Buechler (12), freshman outsides Mac May (12) and Jenny Mosser (10) and junior middle Kyra Rogers (9) accounted for all 56 of the Bruins’ kills. May hit at a team-best .550 clip, while Mosser and Rogers turned in a team-leading five blocks apiece. In the back court, junior libero Zana Muno pulled up 21 digs, putting her over the 1,000 dig milestone for her career with 1,018.
Senior outside Mary-Kate Marshall (11) and freshman outside Maddie Goings (10) led the way for the Beavers in the loss, which snapped a five-match win streak. Goings rounded out a double-double with 11 digs, while three other players notched double-digit save tallies. Freshman setter Kylee McLaughlin paced the team with 16 digs to go with her 30 assists.
Oregon State built a 10-6 lead early in Set 1, as five players notched kills, but could not hold on. The Bruins cut the margin to one four times, before breaking through with a 4-0 run, including two Mosser kills, to go ahead 17-15. The Beavers tied it up at 19, 20 and 21, but a stuff by Sarah Spocil and Gates put UCLA on top 24-21. A kill, an ace and a block kept OSU in it with a tie at 24. A hitting error coupled with a solo block by Marshall gave the Beavers a set-point try at 26-25. After trailing 27-25, UCLA earned a shot at 28-27 with a Mosser kill and a hitting error. A pair of Goings kills made it 29-28 OSU, but the Bruins finally managed three in a row, the last two on Buechler kills, to steal away the 31-29 victory.
UCLA jumped out to a 7-3 lead in Set 2, with two kills and a block by May. A 5-0 midset run, including kills by four different players, pushed the Bruin advantage to eight at 19-11. The teams split the final 12 points of the set. A Gates putaway made it 24-15 UCLA. A service error and a Serene Bruin kill kept OSU alive, but Buechler wrapped up the set at 25-17.
The Bruins took an early 5-2 lead in Set 3 and never allowed OSU closer than one the rest of the way. Leading by just one at 14-13, UCLA put together a 7-1 run, including two Buechler kills and a kill and a block by Gates, to vault ahead 21-14. Oregon State narrowed the gap to four at 23-19 on a Kayla Ellis ace, but May prevented a further comeback with a pair of kills to close out the sweep.
