Nebraska Lands All-Big 12 Texas Transfer Lexi Sun

Former Texas outside hitter, Lexi Sun, has announced her decision to transfer to Nebraska. Sun, who will be a sophomore in 2018, is eligible to compete with the Huskers immediately.

Sun earned a number of awards while with the Longhorns including All-Big 12, All-Southwest Region, 2017 AVCA All-America honorable mention and All-Big 12 Freshman Team. In her freshman campaign, Sun totaled 337 kills (3.27 per set) on a .277 hitting clip, 151 digs (1.47 per set), 65 blocks (0.63 per set) and 18 aces (0.17 per set).

Out of high school, Sun was the top-ranked recruit in the nation and was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year. Sun made an immediate impact for the Longhorn team that won the Big 12 title and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.

Sun announced that she would be transferring out of Texas back in February and since then took visits to Nebraska, Wisconsin and USC before her decision to sign with the Huskers. She is expected to join the program in May or June for the start of summer classes and conditioning.

“After visiting Nebraska for the first time, I found that overall the program is the best fit for me when taking into consideration what the entire program has to offer,” said Sun. “I cannot wait to be a part of the enthusiastic Husker volleyball family and am so excited to experience it with my new teammates very soon. I want to thank my family, whom I consider my number one support system. I am so thankful to have them by my side in this journey. We all can’t wait to be Huskers.”

Sun will be one of a number of outside hitters within the program, including Mikaela Foecke who has a long list of honors like Sun. Foecke has been an instrumental part of the Huskers program, winning two national championships with the team. Sun’s transfer to Nebraska does seem out of place as the Huskers just lost their starting setter Kelly Hunter to graduation while Hunter Atherton announced her decision to leave the program as the backup setter. The team will bring in to-be freshman setter Nicklin Hames as the only true setter on the roster for the upcoming season.

The addition of Sun will add more depth to the Husker lineup, with John Cook’s goal being to make her a strong six-rotation player.

“a long list of honors like Sun . .” What? Since Foecke has been the final four MVP twice. . . I sort of think Foecke is vastly more decorated. . . . how pissed are you west coast wankers that you lost this one, too? Wow.. . . #Gits

Well there are a little similar if you’re comparing both Foecke’s and Sun’s senior year coming out of high school.

Well, both were Gatorade PoY. .. … and then when they were both freshmen, Foecke won a National Championship and final four MVP and Sun, well, she quit. . .. . yeah, very comparable. . . #NOTsoMUCH

Well I said “coming out of high school” not “coming out of their freshman year”.

Lexi never really connected with Shook at Texas, which is why her stats are low. But how much better is it going to be with another freshman setter coming in. Hope that setter is better than Shook was in Texas.

How is this transfer “out of place?”

Wow! The only missing piece is an outstanding Libero for the future. Hames will get to set for Jazz, Sami, Sabo, and Lexi for the next 3 years, add Stivrins and Chesney as middle blockers along with Halley’s defense…The NCAA Tournament is in Omaha in 2020. Cook has got the team set up for a serious title run in 2020. The Huskers will be a very experienced team full of seniors that have played together for 3 years. Not to mention the new recruits scheduled to come in.
