Michigan swept American on their home court in the first round of the NCAA Volleyball tournament Thursday evening.
The Wolverines advance to take on Oregon Friday night at 7:30 PM with the home court advantage, again.
The first set was a point for point battle between the team, until Michigan went on a 12-3 run, halting the Eagle’s momentum all together. The Wolverines wrapped up the first set at 25-13.
The second set was a different story, with American coming out strong, going up on the Wolverines 17-13 late. A Claire Kieffer-Wright kill stopped the Eagles run, while starting a Michigan 4-0 run to tie up the set. American kept pushing back, taking another three point lead, before Michigan tied up the set at 21 all. The Wolverines pushed through to take the set 25-23.
The third set was all Michigan, who hit for .542 in the set and holding American to .097. The set and match ended when Michigan rolled through the Eagles 25-12.
To lead Michigan’s offense was Kieffer-Wright with 13 kills, while Abby Cole and Kelly Murphy each put down 10 kills of their own. From the back court, Jenna Lerg picked up 14 digs for the Wolverines.
For American Aleksandra Kazala killed nine balls and picked up seven digs and Shannon Webb added seven more kills.
