Poland’s PlusLiga’s Cuprum Lubin had a tough task at hand this weekend: travel to face Zawiercie at its oppoent’s home, itself with a squad depleted with injuries. Despite this fact, what was left of the team entered their game with their heads held high. Their ambition paid off, as Lubin won the match in a very hard fought 3-2 battle. The post-match reaction from Lubin’s assistant coach, Tomasz Wasilkowki, shows how much of an unpredictable sport volleyball can be:
“I do not understand volleyball. I do not know volleyball. We were in agony yesterday evening. Half of the team did not train during the whole week. We were weakened by injuries, diseases, viruses, and against Zawiercie we fought as equals with the home-team. We won 3: 2 in very difficult conditions and in a very rough environment.”
The loss was very disappointing for Zawircie, as per Grzegorz Paiak’s words:
The first set was empty of emotion, as Lubin did not play anything in it. Maybe it was a little too easy for us to win, which harmed us. Later, Lubin started to play better, but that’s what we expected. However, we were able to reduce our mistakes and force a tie-break. It was to no avail though, as we made too many mistakes in the last set to be able to fight for the win.
Lubin now sits in 8th place of PlusLiga’s standings with a 12-10 record.
