Ohio State Women Have Just 1 Top 25 Team on 2017 Non-Conference Schedule

The Ohio State Buckeyes have unveiled their competition schedule for the 2017 women’s indoor season.

Ohio State will face a relatively-soft schedule outside of conference play. Other than a matchup in Provo against BYU at the season-opening BYU tournament on August 25th, the team doesn’t play a single team that finished in the top 25 last season in non-conference play.

That doesn’t meant that they’re entirely without competition as preparation for their Big Ten schedule, which is one of the two toughest conferences in the country. They will play at the Dayton tournament, which has intriguing matchups against Western Kentucky and Dayton – both of whom were in the top 25 until the very last AVCA poll of the season.

The two teams, who were the Conference USA and Atlantic 10 champions, respectively, last season, combined for a whopping 60-5 record, and both ended their seasons in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Once Big Ten play begins, the Buckeyes will circle their game against Nebraska. Ohio State has had the Huskers’ number lately. Last year, they gave Nebraska their first loss of the season when Nebraska was 12-0 and the only unbeaten left in the NCAA Division I. In total, Ohio State has won 3 of the last 4 against Nebraska – including in Nebraska’s 2015 NCAA title-winning season. While last year, the two teams played twice, this season they’ll have just one matchup – in Columbus on November 17th.

The Buckeyes toughest stretch will be a 15 day period from October 13-27th where Ohio State plays Illinois, Northwestern, Minnesota, Michigan and Purdue. After a home game against Indiana, they then hit the road for back-to-back games against Elite 8 qualifier Wisconsin on November 3rd and Final 4 qualifier Minnesota on November 4th.

Ohio State finished last season 22-13 overall and 10-10 in conference. That includes a 10-3 record at home, but just a 4-9 record in true away games. They beat Missouri State in the opening round of the NCAA tournament 3-0, then knocked off Kansas State 3-2 to advance to the Sweet 16. Their season was eventually ended by Wisconsin, who beat the Buckeyes 3-2 in the 3rd round.

See the full schedule below, with times and exact dates of tournament games still to be determined.
