Pakistan Men’s Volleyball Captain Retires from National Team

Pakistan men’s volleyball national team captain Naseer Ahmad has announced his retirement from international play after 15 years representing his country.

“Yes, I have resigned from the national team. I have decided this after a deep thought and want to give chance to the youngsters,” Naseer told ‘The News’ in an interview on Monday.When asked whether he was happily folding his International career, the country’s top spiker said: “It’s always not easy to quit at a stage when you can still play. But one day you will have to quit and I have done this to give chance to young lot who are growing well under the foreign coach.”

Ahmad, an outside hitter, was Pakistan’s captain at almost every major international tournament this decade, including the 2010 and 2014 Asian Games, the 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games, and the 2016 South Asian Games. He plays professionally in Lebanon for the last decade, and says that he will continue to play professionally in Lebanon and for WAPDA in Pakistani cups.

Pakistan is currently the 50th-ranked team in the world, but was ranked as high as 43rd in the world after a 7th-place finish at the 2011 Asian Championships, where the country beat Kazakhstan and Thailand to advance from pool play before eventually beating Sri Lanka 3-0 in a 7th-place match. Naseer scored 10 points in that match.
