The Pepperdine women’s volleyball team fell to Santa Clara in four sets at the Leavey Center on Thursday night, despite Jasmine Gross’ record-setting 11 blocks and Hana Lishman’s career-best 32 digs. The Broncos (14-12, 7-7 WCC) posted 30-28, 25-20, 11-25 and 25-22 final set scores over the Waves (15-13, 7-8 WCC) for the West Coast Conference victory.
Gross became the Pepperdine women’s volleyball program’s all-time single-season block leader with her 167th block of the season after amassing 11 blocks all day. Lishman led the floor with 32 digs and Hannah Frohling, Heidi Dyer and Blossom Sato added double-doubles.

WAVES VS. BRONCOS
Pepperdine outhit Santa Clara with 56 kills on a .139 hitting percentage compared to 49 kills on a .097 output. The Waves also picked up 54 assists and 14.0 team blocks for the effort, while the opposition posted 48 assists and 10.0 team blocks. Each team posted six aces, but the Broncos led the match with 102 digs compared to the opposition’s 99.
THE RECORD
Jasmine Gross broke the Pepperdine women’s volleyball all-time single season block record (including both sideout and rally scoring eras) with her 167th block of the season. That record has stood at 158 blocks since the 1991 and 1992 seasons when Lesli Asplund and Barbara Stross broke it in 111 and 109 sets respectively.
Gross also broke Pepperdine women’s volleyball program’s single season block record for the rally scoring era in last week’s match against Gonzaga, a record she had set in her 2016 freshman campaign at 154 blocks last season. Before 2016, the record stood at 143 blocks by Sophia Milo which happened in 2005.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
Gross made her historic mark on the Pepperdine women’s volleyball record book with her 159th block of the season to put the Waves up 13-9. The Waves worked ahead early in set one, but the Broncos evened things up at the 13-13 mark. Each team posted a 24-24 score, but after a point-for-point battle, the opposition pulled ahead with a 30-28 first set win.
The opposition pulled ahead after an 11-11 tie in the second set, and continued en route to a 25-20 set win to go up 2-0 on the night.
With the match on the line, the Waves dominated the third set, pulling ahead 11-4 with back-to-back kills from O’Harra. The Waves continued to pound down on the Broncos, amassing a 21-7 lead late in the set. Harris would deliver the final blow for the 25-11 set win.
Despite a big outing in the third set for the Waves, the Broncos came out strong in the fourth, amassing a 14-7 lead that led to a final 25-22 set win and 3-1 match WCC victory.
