More injuries have struck the Southeast Asian Games field as competition got underway over the weekend. Filipino defensive specialist Denden Lazaro will miss the tournament, with Dawn Macandili being called up in her stead.

This would have been Lazaro’s 2nd SEA Games team after playing on the 5th-place team at the 2015 event.

Lazaro pulled a hamstring in an exhibition match last month, and the Philippines’ coach Francis Vicente says that her health is the top priority.

“We know how hard she (Lazaro) worked and how eager she is in representing the country in this tournament,” said Vicente.

“But her health is our top priority. She would serve as a crucial part of the national team in the next three years and we don’t want to further aggravate her injury by fielding her in a very competitive tournament such as the SEA Games.”

Macandili, her replacement, played on the Phillipines’ team at the AVC Asian Women’s Championships where she was named the 2nd-best libero of the tournament.

The full Philippines roster:

  • Mika Reyes (captain)
  • Abigail Marano
  • Kim Fajardo
  • Gen Casugod
  • Jaja Santiago
  • Maika Ortiz
  • Rhea Dimaculangan
  • Aiza Maizo-Pontillas
  • Frances Molina
  • Alyssa Valdez
  • Jovelyn Gonzaga
  • Dawn Macandili
