What was supposed to be a joyous occasion for Proton fans, an opportunity to meets its new players and coaches, turned out to be a very sad event. The Russian club, in what was supposed to be a traditional season debut press conference, instead made known to its fans that is facing deep financial troubles. Here is what the team’s GM Yuri Baranov had to say:
“The state minister promised to meet with the team and agree on the issue of paying wages with the governor. But the minister did not come to the meeting, the salary was not paid. These words were just another promise. In fact, until now the club has not received a penny. Again, we do not have the means to pay salaries, taxes, mandatory contributions, for preparation for the season, namely: uniforms, medicines, necessary equipment, and so on. In this regard, the existence of the club is in question. Proton is on the verge of a financial collapse.”
The dire situation of the club has already deeply affected its players. Salaries are not being paid, and with it, the star players are left with no funds to finance their expenses in the city. Middle blocker Valeria Zaytseva said in the conference that her landlord has already threatened to evict her from her apartment in the next week if rent is not paid. She had heartfelt words for the fans:
“Understand, dear fans, we wanted to meet with you, we are glad that you are here, we wanted to discuss the usual questions and goals, like the European Cup. It’s great that there is such an opportunity for the team to participate in it, but the situation is very complicated. I myself have played in this club for more than 10 years, worked for many years with today’s leadership, and there has never been such a situation. Only thanks to our leaders there are funds for training, gathering in Balakovo. Imagine, we were not given even a locker room here, they did not even let us enter the hall. How to train? To the new players, I I bow to their courage, because they came here anyways. They don’t complain, just train. But even training now is harmed by the lack of funds.”
Proton, which finished its last season in a respectable 6th place, was founded more than 30 years ago. Will it follow the same route as recently did Russian giant Dynamo Krasnodar?
