After being hired earlier this year and helping their respective team’s qualify for the 2018 FIVB World Championships, Ramon Hernandez and Javier Gaspar will continue as the Puerto Rican men’s and women’s head coaches.
Also on the docket for the Puerto Rican teams, this season is the Central American and Caribbean Games that will take place in Barranquilla, Colombia as well as participation in their respective Pan American Cups.
On the women’s side, Puerto Rico is currently ranked #13 in the world and sits in Pool D of the World Championships that will take place next year. In their pool are #3 Serbia, #4 Brazil, #9 The Dominican Republic, #21 Kazakhstan and #33 Kenya – one of the more difficult groupings at the event. The women qualified for their fifth straight World Championship berth after going 2-0 in their NORCECA qualifier event.
For the men, they also are in Pool D of the World Championships and are featured in one of the easier brackets in the competition. Though this is the case, they are ranked #29 in the world from the third lowest rank in the competition. In their pool are #3 Poland, #8 Iran, #14 Bulgaria, #16 Cuba and #18 Finland. The men qualified in the final NORCECA qualifier for the event, that had to be moved due to hurricanes this summer, picking up the final slot into the tournament along with Cuba.
The remainder of the staff for each team will be announced in the coming weeks.
