Rich High School Wins 17th State Title Over Panguitch

The Utah high school state championships have ended, crowning five champions. The tournament took place at Utah Valley University.

In 2A North Summit won their first ever state title, while 1A’s Rich has won 17 total. Morgan and Bountiful won their second consecutive state titles, and Lone Peak fought through a tough five set match.

1A

Rich took away Panguitch’s chance for a third consecutive state title, to take their 17th overall championship in four sets 3-1, 27-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-19.

Rich’s last state title was back in 2008, coach Cindy Stuart has led the team to 15 of their 17 state titles. Julia Hopkin led the team with 23 kills, while Ashley Groll added 15.

For Panguitch, three players recorded 13 kills – McCall Tebbs, Jordan Bennett and Abbey Blevins.

2A

North Summit brought home their first state title with a four set victory over South Summit 3-1, 25-22, 24-26, 25-9, 25-22.

Ashlin Blonquist led North Summit with 24 kills, while Hunter Vernon added 19 kills, making a comeback from last season as she tore her ACL in last years state tournament.

This is the fourth time this season that these team have played each other, where North Summit swept South Summit each time.

3A

Morgan takes home their second straight championship with sweep over Desert Hill 3-0, 25-15, 28-26, 25-21.

With the win, it marks Morgan’s 15th championship and 13th under coach Liz Wiscombe. Anna Cox put down 14 kills, as the only returning regular rotation player from last years championship squad.

Desert Hills Rachel Winters put down 15 kills and Charity Bradley added 14.

4A

Bountiful took down Corner Canyon for their second consecutive 4A state title in three 3-0, 25-17, 25-17, 2522.

Seyvion Waggnor recorded a match-best 15 kills and five blocks for Bountiful.

Corner Canyon made it a long way from two years ago, when the squad only posted two wins on the season.

5A

Lone Peak battled through a five set thriller to take the 5A state title over Pleasant Grove 3-2, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 24-26, 17-15.

Madelyn Robinson posted 16 kills, while Gabi Shumway added 14. Robinson earned the winning kill, to end the fifth set 17-15.
