After a year as a volunteer assistant coach at Cal, Kolby Kanatake will stay in the Bay Area as he was recently hired to be the assistant coach for the indoor and beach teams at San Francisco.

First year head coach Frank Lavrisha said in a USF announcement, “We are excited to have Kolby join the USF coaching staff as he brings a wealth of volleyball experience and a genuine interest in coaching players and teams to achieve their best.”

In his one year at Cal, the Golden Bears went 9-21 overall and had an all-conference honoree in libero Maddy Kerr. He was hired by now retired Rich Feller who served for 18 years as head coach.

The Honolulu native played his collegiate career at the University of Hawaii where he was an All-American at the libero position from 2013-16. He amassed 775 digs which ranks him third all-time in program history to go along with 2.34 digs per set ranking him sixth in that category.

As a three-year starter, he was a 2016 AVCA Second Team All-American and was an honorable mention pick in 2015. He also garnered All-MPSF Second Team in his junior and senior seasons. He was the first libero in program history to earn conference player of the week. With him on the team, they advanced to the NCAA tournament in 2015 for the first time since 2002.

Other coaching experiences include serving as a head coach for a girls’ team at Pacific Rim Volleyball Academy and for a boys’ team at A’o a Koa Volleyball Club.

Kanatake will dive into a new era of USF volleyball as the program looks to rebuild with Lavrisha at the helm. Season begins August 25th as they host the USF/SJSU tournament.
