Sarah Bernson served as the assistant coach at American University for the past five season and will now take her coaching talents to George Washington University as the program’s new head coach.
Bernson will be the ninth head coach in program history.
While at American, Bernson helped the Eagles to a five-year record of 136-26, equating to a .795 winning percentage. The team won four consecutive Patriot League championships which led the squad to four straight trips to the NCAA Tournament. In the 2013 season, the Eagles made it to their program’s first-ever Sweet Sixteen appearance after sweeping both Georgia and Duke in the first rounds of the tournament.
Bernson’s job responsibilities while at American included a large role in recruiting, training and operations. There were six players in Bernson’s tenure that earned All-Patriot League selections, two Freshmen of the Year and one Libero of the Year honors.
Prior to American, Bernson spent eight seasons at Cornell University, with three seasons as head coach. In those eight seasons, Bernson helped the Big Red to a trio of Ivy League Championships (2004-06) and two NCAA Tournament berths. In her time with Cornell, Bernson helped to develop her first-ever All-American and all-time kills leader.
Bernson also had a short coaching stint at Cal State Monterey Bay from 2001-04 where she helped the squad transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II.
Bernson played collegiate ball at Saint Mary’s (Calif.) where she earned her bachelor’s degree in English and Art in 1999.
Last season, the Colonials went 11-18 overall and 4-10 in conference play.
