2017 SWATCH BEACH VOLLEYBALL FIVB WORLD TOUR FINALS – MEN

The Men’s quarterfinals have been set after the Round of 12 commenced on the third day of play at the 2017 FIVB World Tour Finals. The winner of the tournament will take home $100,000 to split between partners.

Starting off the Round of 12, Canada’s Chaim Schalk and Ben Saxton shock a strong Russian crew of Nikita Liamin and Viacheslav Krasilnikov in straight sets for a 2-0, (21-15, 21-15) win. The surprise comes from the poor way the Canadian duo began their World Tour Final journey, finishing last in their pool with a 0-2 record but were able to muscle through the Russians with ease.

“It was really smooth. We are just getting better every game. We find our side out rhythm, and we were tough to stop,” said Schalk following the match.

German wild card choice, Markus Bockermann and Lorenz Schumann flew through Americans Theo Brunner and Casey Patterson 2-0, (21-19, 21-17) to advance to the quarterfinal round.

After a tough start to the Finals, Spain’s Pablo Herrera and Adrian Gavira came out strong in the Round of 12 to take down Germans Jonathan Erdmann and Armin Dollinger 2-0, (21-12, 21-13).

“All we needed was to play more relaxed. We didn’t enjoy ourselves on the court much in the first two games and we realized that, so we changed our mindset for this game and that was the key,” said Herrera after their turnaround match.

Finally, Austria’s Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst were able to take down the strong Brazilian squad of Saymon Santos and Alvaro Filho 2-0, (21-18, 21-17).
