Southern Mississippi To Add Beach Volleyball For 2018-19 Season

It is spreading like wildfire, beach volleyball has been on the rise and yet another college is picking up the sport to add to their NCAA sponsored events – Southern Mississippi.

The university will now have 17 NCAA sponsored sports that included 10 women’s sports and seven men’s programs. Beach volleyball will be an official sport on the Southern Miss campus come the 2019 season, giving the university time to bring in athletes over the next year.

“The University of Southern Mississippi is pleased to announce the sponsorship of women’s beach volleyball,” said Southern Miss Athletics Director Jon Gilbert. “We are excited to offer additional opportunities for student-athletes at the University. Beach volleyball is the fastest-growing NCAA sport and is gaining in its popularity in our region.”

It is uncertain at this time who will lead the beach volleyball team, but a trend has formed with the indoor coach taking over the responsibility.

An emerging sport into the NCAA in 2009 beach volleyball has rapidly grown since with 65 NCAA institution holding beach volleyball at the beginning of the 2016-17 season. Since then a number of other institutions have announced the addition of the sport to their sponsored programs:
