Stanford Women Among 822 Teams Garnering AVCA Team Academic Award

A record 822 teams garnered the AVCA’s Team Academic Award for the 2016-17 season, besting the previous high of 764, which came in 2016.

The award honors high school and college teams that maintain a 3.30 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 GPA on a 5.0 scale.

Since its inception in 1992-93, the award has grown in leaps and bounds from 62 the inaugural year to 822 in 2017, its 25th year.

The 2017 recipients consist of 277 high school girls teams, 150 NCAA Division III, 145 NCAA Division I and 119 Division II honorees.

Five of the honored squads also won their respective collegiate national championship: Stanford (Division I), Concordia St Paul (Division II), Calvin College (Division III), Hastings College (NAIA) and Ohio State men (Division I-II men).

Teams also were recognized for posting a 15-year streak of Team Academic honors: Bowling Green State, Indiana State and Toledo of Division I; Wayne State (Nebraska) of Division II; Central College (IA) of Division III; Concordia (Neb.) of NAIA.

Nine high school girls teams garnered the multi-year accolade: Batavia, Baytown Sterling, Cathedral, Charlotte Latin, Hastings St. Cecilia, Ironwood Ridge, Jonesboro, Lutcher and Pine Grove Area.
