Stubbe/Meppelink, Caminati/Rossi Take Aalsmeer Gold

FIVB AALSMEER ONE-STAR

 

Americans Bill Kolinske and Miles Evans were denied their first ever FIVB title, falling in the championships match at the Aalsmeer One-Star to Italy’s Marco Caminati and Enrico Rossi on Sunday. The victory gave the Italians their first FIVB World Tour gold.

The Americans advanced to the title match by rallying for a tiebreak win over Turkey’s Murat Giginoglu and Hasan Huseyin Mermer (15-21, 21-17, 15-13).

Meanwhile, the Italians topped Ukraine’s Segiy Popov/Oleksii Denin 23-21, 21-12 in the semifinals.

 

Mermer/Giginoglu grabbed the bronze with a three-set win over the Ukrainians, rallying for the 13-21, 21-19, 18-16 victory.

 

On the women’s side, the semifinals were played on Saturday leaving just the medal matches for Sunday’s action.

Homestanding and top seeded  Joy Stubbe and Madelein Meppelink took the gold with a 21-18, 21-18 win over Germany’s Kim Behrens and Sandra Ittlinger. The victory is the Dutch side’s first on the FIVB World Tour this year.

Americans Betsi Flint and Kelley Larsen bested Japan’s Miki Ishii and Megumi Murakami 25-23, 21-18 for the bronze. Flint and Larsen won gold at the Nanjing two star (June 18) and Ulsan One Star (July 22).
