Florida State’s Vanessa Freire was the only beach volleyball player to advance to the next round of nominations for Woman of the Year, along with 20 of her indoor colleagues.
Piper Thomas earned a spot on the MVC Preseason All-Conference Team as her Northern Iowa Panthers are the league’s predicted favorite.
The women are among the record 581 athletes nominated this year.
December brought the close of the collegiate women’s volleyball season, including a national title for Nebraska, as well as multiple coaching changes. Postseason international and beach awards also were announced alongside plans for the 2018 seasons.
Attendance records, upsets and win streaks highlighted the collegiate volleyball landscape in October, while the 2018 World Championships field was set, the FIVB tested new beach rules and announced two drug-related reinstatements on the international scene.
College volleyball stole the show in September with a schedule affected by hurricanes, impacted by major injuries and highlighted by milestone wins and upsets. The World Grand Champions Cup, AVP Championship and much more also dotted the volleyball landscape.
