Provo, Utah – In each teams second match of a double-header day one, the 21st-ranked team in the preseason AVCA Coaches Poll, Ohio State, got the best of Saint Louis in four sets.

All-American setter Taylor Hughes was her usual self in the match as she posted 39 assists, six digs, five kills (on eight tries with no errors) and four blocks. She set up a balanced attack for the team, as five others had four or more kills in the match, including senior outside hitter Ashley Wenz who had a team-high 12.

In total, Ohio State hit .302 as a team as they were able to overcome 26 combined kills from Saint Louis’ Nenye Okoro and Maya Taylor with strong defense that pushed the Billikens to a .068 hitting percentage.

That strong defense was led by a dominant block, as the Buckeyes had 18 blocks to Saint Louis’ four. Freshman Lauren Witte made a strong impact in her second match as the former high school all-american had a match-high nine blocks to complement Wenz’s eight, Madison Smeathers‘ six and Hughes’ four.

Serving was also a strength for Ohio State, who had nine aces while Saint Louis posted just two. Although the Buckeyes dropped a close second set, they were in control for the other three as they moved to 2-0 on the season.

Up next, Ohio State finishes off the BYU Tournament with the host-team: BYU. That one takes place tomorrow in a top 25 matchup that will determine the non-conference tournament winner. Saint Louis now takes on UTRGV with the winner netting their first victory of the season.
