The TCU beach volleyball team came up on the short end of a pair of matches to ranked teams Thursday with a 3-2 setback to No. 16 Loyola Marymount and a 4-1 decision to No. 8 Long Beach State.
The Horned Frogs (3-10) and the Lions were tied at 2-2 heading into the final match of the day between TCU’s Brooke Sassin and Jordan Westendorff and LMU’s Bozena Culo/Emma Doud. The TCU duo posted a 21-11 in the first set before dropping the next two 21-15, 15-11.
Earlier against the Lions, TCU’s Jillian Bergeson and Jaelyn Greene defeated LMU’s Savannah Slattery/McKayla Ferris, 21-18, 21-12, and TCU’s Jensyn Bledsoe and Molly Scheel beat Veronica Nederend/Maddie Leiphardt 22-24, 21-14, 15-13.
LMU’s Sara Kovac/Jessie Prichard held off TCU’s Cassie House and Haven Hill 18-21, 21-14, 15-11, while Chloe Reinig/Kekai Whitford edged TCU’s Hannah Rogers and Claire Doyle 21-17, 21-16.
In their six straight match against a ranked team, the Horned Frogs couldn’t overcome the host 49ers with House/Hill picking up TCU’s win in the set with a 22-20, 21-16 decision over Sasha Karelov/Anete Brinke.
The Horned Frogs will close out the four-match road trip Saturday when they face No. 6 Cal Poly for the second time this season, and No. 10 Arizona. Match times are set for 11 a.m. (CT) and 1 p.m. (CT), respectively, at Pismo Beach in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
