Bringing Home the Gold in Dallas
USA Volleyball awarded medals in 26 divisions this week at the 2018 Adult Championships in Dallas, Texas. Notables among those taking home gold included:
- Team Dream in Women’s Open, a team comprised entirely of African-American players, including Haley Eckerman (Texas ’15), Kaz Brown (Kentucky ’18) and Haleigh Washington (Penn State ’18)
- Team LVC in Men’s Open, whose roster included setter Stephen Braswell (St. Francis ’17) and new Charleston men’s volleyball head coach, Mike Iandolo
- Rusty 78 in Men’s 78-and-Over, a team which went 8-3 over the course of three days to prove convincingly that volleyball is indeed a lifetime sport
The Stars Align for Fathers & Sons in Men’s A
About six years ago, two Stanford volleyball teammates from the 1980’s, Dave Saeta and John McColl, began discussing the possibility of one day playing adult nationals with their five sons. Several graduations later, the stars aligned to form Fathers & Sons with David’s sons, Michael Saeta (UC Irvine ’17), Andrew Saeta (Stanford Swimming ’13) and Matthew Saeta (Davidson Baseball ’15), plus John’s sons, David McColl and Daniel McColl. Rounding out the side would be another Stanford teammate, Rod Fletcher, with his son, Jack Fletcher, as well as Mark Price, Andy Price, Will Price, Carlos Valeiras and John Valeiras. This week, Fathers & Sons won the 2018 Men’s A final in straight sets.
