Tennessee Defeats Troy 3-0

The Tennessee Volunteers defeated Troy 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-19) in their final non-conference match of the season Wednesday at Trojan Arena.

Junior outside hitter Kendra Turner led the Vols (11-6) with a season-high 13 kills to go along with five digs, four blocks and an ace.

Fifteen of the Tennessee’s 19 players entered the match. Ten Vols had at least one kill and 11 had a dig or more.

“[Senior] Nora Reed came out and hit .500 and really did a nice job with four blocks,” Tennessee head coach Rob Patrick said. “Kendra came in and did a wonderful job playing six rotations and hitting and blocking very well.

“We had some people who have played really well in practice come out here and play really well in this match.”

The Vols return to SEC play this weekend with a 2 p.m. Sunday match at No. 25 Kentucky (11-4, 4-0 SEC), the Vols’ second match against a nationally ranked team this season.

Troy (6-14) scored the first five points of the match, but the Vols eventually climbed back into the set. Tennessee won seven of nine points midway through the set to go up 18-15 on a kill by Raina Hembry. The Vols led the rest of the set, taking it 25-21 on the first ace ofAsha Phillips’ career.

The Trojans led the second set 20-15, and the Vols answered with a 7-0 run to take the lead with middle hitter Stephanie Buss serving. Troy tied the set at 22-22 but the Vols won three of the final four points as Turner finished the set 25-23 with a cross court shot.

The Vols surged midway through the third set, winning seven of eight points to take a 20-16 lead on a block by Sedona Hansen and Raina Hembry. Tennessee led the rest of the way, taking the final three points to wrap up the set and match 25-19.
