Spanish club Teruel Volleyball has announced in its official twitter page the passing away of its libero, Vinicius Silva, at only 26 years of age. The Brazilian national was found dead in his apartment by his teammates after missing one of the team’s practice. The cause of death has not yet been established and the team’s officials are waiting on an autopsy to further comment the case. Upon his signing with the club, Vinicius had passed all necessary physical tests carried by the team.

Vinicius arrived in Spain in 2015 and last year was voted as the competition’s best libero. Here is how his team reacted to the tragic news:

“Your smile is eternal. You will leave us with an irreplaceable gap. Rest in peace, friend. The messages you have received today show that you were not just anyone. You gained an enormous space in the hearts of all those who were lucky enough to meet you. Take care of us from up there. We already see your star. We want to thank the citizens of Teruel and Aragón, and all Spanish society for the love received throughout the day and the respect with which we have all been treated in one of the saddest days of our history.”

Current Brazilian national teamer Douglas Souza dedicated Brazil’s WCH victory against Canada to Vinicius (Globo.com):

“I want to dedicate this victory to Vinicius. He undoubtedly was part of my life story. I dedicate this to him and his entire family. He played at Pinheiros’ youth team with me, although at a different age category, as I am younger than him. But he was always a very sweet guy, very nice to younger players. He always gave advice. He was very affectionate.”
