Things have been picking up for Nebraska ever since a season-opening loss to Florida. Since that point, the Huskers have collected four straight victories and now appear to be closing in on the return of Lexi Sun.

Coming into the week, Nebraska head coach John Cook gave an update that the team would be revving the action up for Sun. Sure enough that occurred as she warmed up with the team for two of their three matches this weekend. That started against Ohio on Friday night.

She was in street clothes for the first three matches of the season, but Sun went through the whole warm-up process and was dressed with the Huskers for their most recent pair of matches over aforementioned Ohio and Santa Clara. Adding to the positive news is that she was taking swings and hitting, which was something she was limited at previously.

“We wanted to get her to go through a warm-up,” Cook told the Jeff Sheldon at HuskersHQ.com. “She went through a warm-up and hit. We’re just gradually upping it for her each day.”

Sun, a 6’2″ outside hitter from Encinitas, California, transferred into Nebraska this offseason after her freshman year at Texas. She was an All-Big 12 selection and AVCA All-America Honorable Mention pick in her lone year with the Longhorns as she notched 3.27 kills per set. She also came into the program as the top recruit in the country.

This past weekend, Nebraska won three matches. They defeated Santa Clara, Ohio and Wake Forest as part of the Ameritas Players Challenge, losing just one set along the way.

Mikaela Foecke and Jazz Sweet continue to hold down the pins at a star-caliber level for the Huskers, but adding Sun would give the team more versatility, depth and another top-notch attacker. Currently just three Nebraska players are over two kills per set – and one is middle Lauren Stivrins who sits at 2.06 kills per set. With Sun back, the Huskers attack could be taken to the next level and they could boast the top outside hitter group in the nation.
