The UNC Greensboro Spartan women’s volleyball team is bringing on Anncharra Montgomery, a transfer from Illinois State, for the 2017 season. Montgomery will a fifth-year senior and have one year left of play for the Spartans.
“We feel very fortunate to have someone with Annchara’s collegiate playing experience joining us this fall.” UNC Greensboro head coach Corey Carlin said in the team release of the news. “She comes from a very well respected and highly competitive program at Illinois State and understands how to compete at a high level. She brings a lot of versatility because she’s played multiple positions in her career and can contribute to the team in many different ways.”
A 6’0″ middle blocker from Indianapolis, Montgomery attended Illinois State for the past four years. After redshirting in year one, she came on as a substitution in 2014 for a Redbird team that won a match in the NCAA Tournament. In 2015 and 2016, she played in a total of 29 matches with 10 starts and had 32 kills and 10 blocks last season.
“Beyond her physical attributes, we were very impressed with her as a person.” Carlin added in the release. “She’s a class act, very academically oriented and a very hard working young lady so we knew very early on in talking with her that she would be a great fit into our team culture. We’re definitely looking forward to getting her in the fold with our team this preseason.”
UNC Greensboro finished 2016 with an 18-13 record that includes an 11-5 mark in SoCon play. That comes after two straight 20+ win seasons as they’ve fallen in the SoCon Tournament semifinals each of the past three years.
