USC’s Lanier Posts 24 Kills Over UCA, San Diego Battles To Down Tigers

USC survived a strong UCA team to move onto the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Sugar Bears came out hot in the first set, shocking the Trojans as they took the early 1-0 match lead with a first set score of 25-22. UCS turned things around in the second but not without difficulty as UCA kept things close before the Trojans closed things out 25-23. The third set saw USC take a wider barring on the Sugar Bears to win 25-28 while they dominated in the fourth 25-12 to advance to the second round.

Khalia Lanier tore up the floor with 24 kills and four aces in the Trojans win over UCA. Brittany Abercrombie posted 14 kills to hit the 1,000 kills mark exactly in the match while Niki Withers posted 11 kills. Setter Reni Meyer-Whalley dished out 26 assists and 11 digs for a double-double while Victoria Garrick and Jenna Adams picked up 13 and 11 digs, respectively.

Savanah Allen and Megan Nash both posted 12 kills in the loss to the Trojans. Three Sugar bears picked up double-digit digs – Haley Tippett (13), Amanda Dimon (11) and Rayna Jefferis (10).

San Diego fought through a tough LSU squad to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Toreros fought hard in the first set to take the 1-0 lead in the match as the Tigers stayed right behind them until San Diego claimed set one at 25-22. The second set featured 11 ties by the time it was 14 all, with the Tigers then taking charge of the set. They continued this until San Diego caught back up at 24-24, but the Tigers were able to punch away the last two points to tie the match 1-1

The third saw the Toreros led 19-14 as a part of an 8-0 run. The Tigers fought their way back but couldn’t finish, dropping the third 25-23. The fourth saw just a small amount of cushion for the Toreros as they led the entire first set. San Diego capped off the match with their best hitting performance of the night, a .295 set hitting clip, to win 25-21.

Jayden Kennedy led the Toreros with 17 kills while Lauren Fuller added another 15 on a .351 hitting clip. Addie Picha chipped in another 13 kills on a .480 hitting performance while setter Kristen Gengenbacher dished out 52 assists and 11 digs for a double-double. In the backcourt, Lizzy Tardieu picked up 21 digs along with Roxie Wiblin‘s 10.

Four Tigers posted double-digit kills in the loss – Gina Tillis (18), Jacqui Armer (12), Taylor Bannister (11) and Toni Rodriguez (11). Tillis picked up 14 digs as well to record a double-double while Raigen Cianciulli picked up a match-best 23 digs.

USC will take on San Diego Saturday at 5 PM for their shot at the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament.
