UTA Hands Coastal Carolina First Sun Belt Lost with Sweep

ARLINGTON, Texas – Nearly two weeks since their last home match, the UT Arlington volleyball team returned to the College Park Center and put on a show. The Mavs handed Sun Belt Conference foe Coastal Carolina its first league loss of the season in a three-set sweep (25-22, 25-19, 25-23) on Friday night (Oct. 12).

With the win, the Mavericks improve to 11-7 overall and 5-3 in Sun Belt action, while the Chanticleers fall to 6-8 on the season and 5-1 in conference play.

Zhanelle Geathers led the Mavs with 11 kills in the win over Coastal. She also added a dig, a block and hit .400 in the match. Kylie Jedlicka added 12 digs and seven kills, while Petra Manderson finished with 12 digs and five kills. Madelyn St. Germain tallied 12 digs and Alex Janak and Kylee Kapp recorded 16 assists and 13 assists, respectively.

The opening set was a back-and-forth battle to start. Trailing 20-17, the Mavs used an 8-2 run to secure the comeback victory in the opening frame (25-22).

Coastal Carolina jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead in the second set, forcing a UTA timeout. Trailing 13-9, the Mavs used a 10-0 run, highlighted by a kill and a service ace from Petra Manderson, to grab a 19-13 advantage. The Mavericks would go on to take the set 25-19 after back-to-back errors to closed the set for the Chants.

UTA opened the third set with a 5-1 run, but Coastal responded and outscored the Mavs 14-9 to grab a 15-14 lead. Trailing Coastal Carolina 17-16, UTA used a 6-0 run, thanks to four Coastal errors and kills from Bre Walp and Brooke Townsend, to take a 22-17 advantage. The Mavericks would hold off a late rally from the Chants and take the final set 25-23.

The Mavericks will return to the College Park Center tomorrow (Oct.13) when they host Appalachian State (13-6, 5-2 SBC). First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
