University of Texas at San Antonio nabbed Texas A&M transfer Montse Castro, a 6’7″ outside hitter/middle blocker from Mexico. Castro will be a redshirt sophomore in 2017 and have three years left of eligibility as she can play right away for the Roadrunners.

Castro started her prep career in Mexico City at Universidad Panamericana Preparatoria and was named the best middle blocker at the private schools nationals. Her play earned her a spot with the Mexico U20 National Teams in 2014 and 2015, as her nation finished fourth both years. In 2015, she spent her first season in College Station redshirting, leading to her redshirt freshman season in 2016 when she did not see playing time at Texas A&M.

If Castro is to play the middle blocker position, she will have to compete with five other players. At the outside hitter spot, there are four other athletes for UTSA. Regardless, Castro should see time, at least in a three-rotational offensive role.

The Roadrunners collected a 20-win season in 2016 as they went 10-4 in Conference-USA. They eventually bowed out in the C-USA Tournament to a ranked Western Kentucky team, but overall it has been seven consecutive 20+ win seasons for UTSA, with their last NCAA Tournament appearance coming in 2013.
