University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is bringing on Katie Mahoney, a transfer from Eastern Washington, to help bolster its roster. Mahoney played one season in the Pacific Northwest and will come in with sophomore standing as she has three years left of eligibility and can play right away.

A 6’1″ outside hitter from Dundee, Illinois, Mahoney began her prep career at Jacobs High School. She was an all-area honorable mention twice and was the team captain as a senior on a team with fellow Panther Bridget Wallenberger. Mahoney started eight matches and appeared in 21 for Eastern Washington in 2016 as a freshman. She averaged 2.36 kills per set and added 36 digs, 13 blocks and four aces.

“Katie came to us as a transfer coming back closer to home and we’re very excited about what she brings to the table,” UW-Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said in the team’s release of the signing. “She has the physicality and versatility to be impactful at the net right away. She has some Division I game experience and has quickly become very comfortable with our team. She’s adapted very quickly to the coaching and it’s been great to have her gain even more experience during our spring season.”

Currently, UW-Milwaukee has three full-time outside hitters on the team, with another playing some defensive specialist. They are adding on a freshman at the position as well, so there should be some competition for Mahoney, who should have the edge in experience.

The Panthers finished 2016 with a winning record of 15-13 as they went 9-7 in the Horizon League before falling in the league tournament’s quarterfinal round. In total, they’ve had winning records in three of the last four seasons.
