2017 FIVB WORLD TOUR – THE HAGUE

Belgium didn’t qualify any volleyball players (indoors or on the beach) to the 2016 Summer Olympics, and have never qualified a men’s pair for the Games, but beach pair Tom Van Walle and Dries Koekelkoren are looking to change that in Tokyo.

The two have now played together for two years focusing on professional beach volleyball after previously having split their time with the indoor game. At Thursday’s 3-star event in the Hague, the pair finished tied for 17th, which is 8 spots better than they did in the last 3-star event in Moscow 3 weeks ago.

The two have earned $7,800 together as a pair so far this season in 5 FIVB World Tour tournaments, and more importantly are currently ranked 36th in the world in FINA’s “entry rankings,” which are the rankings that take individual points for each partner and are used to determine entries for the upcoming World Championships, among other events. As the top Belgium pair, and 14th-ranked pair in Europe, that gives them a good chance at being one of the 48 teams invited to the FIVB Beach World Championships in Vienna, Austria from July 28th-August 6th.

See the two discuss their plan forward below:
