No. 5 Pepperdine went 3-1 last week, while playing four matches against top ranked USC and No. 3 UCLA at the USC Tournament and Zuma Classic.
No. 4 pairing Skylar Caputo and Alexis Filippone were a big part of that success, going 4-0 on the week.
In the first matchup with No. 3 UCLA, the duo bested Mac May/Savvy Simo in straight sets (23-21, 21-17).
Also on Wednesday, the junior and the freshman gutted out a three-set comeback win over USC’s Jo Kremer and Jenna Belton (19-21, 25-23, 15-12).
Saturday brought a three-set win over USC’s Alexandra Poletto and Haley Hallgren (21-15, 19-21, 15-7), which clinched Pepperdine the match victory.
The duo wrapped up the week with a straight set victory over UCLA’s Zana Muno and Savvy Simo (21-16, 21-12).
Caputo, a 5-10 junior from Manhattan Beach, California, is a two-time All-West Coast Conference second team honoree after posting a 43-11 mark in 2016 and 2017. She went 22-7 at the No. 3 position for the Waves in 2017 with partner Heidi Dyer.
Filippone, a 6-2 freshman from Del Mar, California, has had success internationally with USA Volleyball, playing with the U19 USA A1 National Team and the U19 USA International Travel Team. She was a two-year letterwinner at Torrey Pines High School, playing outside hitter and opposite.
With the 3-1 mark, Pepperdine jumped from No. 5 to No. 1 in the AVCA rankings.
