2017 NORCECA MEN’S WORLD QUALIFIER

Team USA and Costa Rica will battle it out in the quarterfinals of the 2017 NORCECA Men’s World Qualifier for a shot at the semifinals against Canada.

The United States has started out the competition on a strong foot but were not able to bypass their way into the semifinals due to a lower point ratio than Canada or Mexico. Now they will have to fight to keep their chances alive for a spot in the 2018 World Championships. Matthew Anderson has been a strong point for the American crew, posting 16 points in the team’s win over Guatemala on day one. Thomas Jaeschke, Taylor Sander and Maxwell Holt have also been strong contributors for the team throughout the competition. In his debut match with the national team, Mitch Stahl posted 10 points in the teams win against the Dominican Republic.

Costa Rica has had strong outputs from a number of players including Alberto Blanco who posted 23 points in the team win over Montinique. Jason Brown, Julio Alvarez and Esteban Araya all posted double-digit points in the four-set win as well. Blanco and Araya added another 14 and 11 points, respectively, in the team sweep over St. Vincent while Blanco was only able to produce eight points in the team’s loss to Mexico.
