Wednesday Recap: #12 IPFW Win In 5, LMU And SHU Both Win At Home

In Wednesday night action, #12 IPFW needed an epic comeback at McKendree Wednesday night to earn their first MIVA win of the season. It was also IPFW’s first-ever win at McKendree.

In other action around the country, Lincoln Memorial easily swept Emmanuel and Sacred Heart needed four sets to knock off Lasell.

#12 IPFW def. McKendree, 3-2 (28-30, 22-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-13)

Key Stats: After dropping the first two sets, one in extra points, the Mastadons got 13 of their season-high 19.5 blocks in the final three sets to seal a conference road win against McKendree. The battle at the net was IPFW’s, earning 19.5 blocks to McKendree’s 9.5. It was the most blocks for IPFW in a match since 2006.

Stat Leaders: Frederico Santos came off the bench in set 2 and got his first career double-double with 43 assists and 10 digs. He also added a career-high 6 blocks, including a solo block on match point, to aid the ‘Dons. Colton Stone had a team-high 19 kills and dug 8 balls. Pelegrin Vargas finished with 18 kills and 8 digs of his own. Tony Price also earned his first career double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Rounding out the double-digit kill performers was Tomas Gago with a career-high 10 kills and a match-high 8 blocks.

For McKendree, senior Nolan Rueter finished with a match-high 20 kills, while also contributing 8 digs and a team-high 5 blocks. Setter Pasquale Fiduccia finished with a match-high 52 assists and nearly had a double-double with 9 digs. Jared Wilcox pounded 16 kills. Libero Zach Thompson dug a match-high 15 balls. The Bearcats’ Brendan Schmidt finished with 12 kills on .400 hitting.

It Was Over When: Freshman setter Frederico Santos sealed the victory with a solo block on Nolan Rueter to finish a 5-1 run in the fifth set, 15-13.

Lincoln Memorial def. Emmanuel, 3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 25-19)

Key Stats: Although Emmanuel outkilled Lincoln Memorial (35-33), the Railsplitters led in aces (9-4), blocks (7-5) and digs (24-23). LMU also nearly doubled Emmanuel’s hitting percentage (.282-.153).

Stat Leaders: Evan Cory led all attackers with 12 kills on .308 hitting to go along with a full stat sheet; 6 digs, a match-high-tying 3 aces, 2 assists and a block. No other Railsplitter had more than 6 kills. Setter AJ Risavy ran the efficient offense with 26 assists and had 3 kills on 3 swings. Jordan Walley had a match-high 7 digs. Joshua Riblett also contributed a match-high-tying 3 aces.

For the Lions, the offense clearly went through Don Thompson (11 kills, .529) and Alejandro Robles (10 kills, .333). The rest of the team hit negative on the evening (14 kills, 17 errors). Setter Caleb Bonaventure had a match-high 31 assists.

It Was Over When: LMU started the third set on a 4-0 run and never gave up the lead on two LMU kills and two EC unforced attack errors. Robles pounded an ace to get the Lions within 17-20, but that was the closest the set came, as LMU finished on a 5-2 run.

Sacred Heart def. Lasell, 3-1 (25-12, 25-15, 24-26, 25-9)

Key Stats: The third set appeared to be an anomaly, as Sacred Heart dominated all phases of the match, including kills (52-19), hitting percentage (.305–.055), blocks (8-4), digs (42-27) and aces (9-4).

Stat Leaders: SHU’s Robert Costigan led all attackers with 11 kills on .429 hitting to go along with 5 digs, 2 aces and a block. Noah Ricchetti led the efficient offense by dishing out 38 assists to go with his 7 digs. At the net, Taylor Bloomquist led all blockers with 4 blocks.

Lasell, an NCAA III institution, had a bright spot. Jordan Aprea finished with a team-high 7 kills, hitting .316, and dug a match-high 13 balls in the loss. No other Laser had more than 3 kills or 4 digs on the night. Setter Andy Henriquez ran the offense with 16 assists.
