Who’s Conference Tourney Bound, and Who’s Not? (4/5/2017 Update)

0 Braden Keith | April 05th, 2017 | College - Men's Indoor, Conference Carolinas, EIVA, MIVA, MPSF, News

With the 2017 regular season waning, last week’s game led to separation in some of the Division I-II men’s conferences, while in others the waters got even muddier. Going through conference-by-conference:

In the EIVA, Penn State cleared its first two hurdles in a season-ending gauntlet with wins over NJIT and Princeton. While the road doesn’t get any easier this coming week, with road games against Sacred Heart and Harvard, the Nittany Lions are now 2 games clear of the field. That’s a substantial lead with just 4 games left to play and 0-12-in-conference Charleston (WV) as one of those 4 games.

They’ll still have a big hand in who makes the 4-team tournament, though. Harvard, Saint Francis, NJIT, Princeton, Sacred Heart, and George Mason are all still alive, though Harvard and Saint Francis have an edge of that group with 6 wins and still 4 left to play.

In the MIVA, Quincy may have salvaged their season with a win over IPFW. With all-but-one team in the conference making the conference tournament, those two teams, with 2 conference wins each, are fighting for the last spot in the tournament. Quincy has McKendree and #2 Ohio State left on its schedule, while IPFW’s remaining games are against #10 Loyola and #7 Lewis. Tie-breakers may be on the horizon, but Quincy should feel good about their chances.

In the MPSF, some clarity has come to a muddled situation from last week. Pepperdine and Stanford with their 7th wins have both clinched their spots for the MPSF tournament, meaning that there’s only 1 remaining slot up for grabs. That spot will almost surely go to USC – with 6 wins, they’re currently in 8th, and their last two games are both against 7-19 Cal Baptist (2-14 in the conference). CSUN and UCSB are the other two teams in contention, but their odds are dependent upon a big upset.

And finally, in the Conference Carolinas, where most of the intrigue is at the top, Barton College knocked off King on Saturday after King knocked off Mount Olive on Friday, and that’s how those teams sit currently atop the conference. But – Barton’s only remaining game is Mount Olive, which means that King still has a chance at sharing the regular-season crown.
