Wichita State middle blocker Emma Wright will miss up to six weeks of play with a broken thumb.

According to The Sunflower the six-foot-three / 190cm sophomore injured her thumb during the fourth set of Wichita’s home match against Tulane on September 21st.

Following her injury in the fourth set Wichita went on to win the match beating Tulane 15-12 in the final set to secure the 3-2 victory. Wright had eight kills, three blocks, and a dig during Friday’s match.

Currently she’s one of Wichita’s top performers, leading the team with 33 blocks this season.

The injury particularly hurts the team considering the fact that they’re already ranked 323rd out of 334 teams nationally.

Despite the absence of their top blocker, two days after their match with Tulane Wichita took home another win against Memphis by winning three straight sets in a row.

If Wright’s injury heals in the expected six week time frame, she’ll be returning to competition in early November. On November 2nd, six weeks to the date of her injury, Wichita will be going on the road for two away matches over the weekend. First they’ll play Cincinnati and then take on East Carolina University before returning home.

If Wright does return to action in November, she’ll be able to compete in the remaining eight matches of the season after missing 10.

Last season Wichita State competed in the NCAA D1 tournament, winning their first round matchup against Radford 3-0 before losing 3-1 to Missouri in the second round.
