Wisconsin’s Sydney Hilley Earns Big Ten Freshman Of The Week Accolades

Minnesota, Nebraska, Penn State and Wisconsin each pick up one player for this week’s Big Ten Player of the Week honors.

Player of the Week

Haleigh Washington of Penn State averaged 2.40 kills per set and 1.40 blocks per set on her way to the honor. Washington also was an extremely reliable option on offense with a .500 hitting clip on the week.

Penn State took down then-#1 Stanford and Texas A&M with Washington putting down 10 kills on 16 attempts with no errors for a .625 hitting percentage against Stanford and 12 kills on a .417 hitting clip with six blocks against Texas A&M. This is Washington’s sixth career Player of the Week honor, while also nabbing the AVCA Player of the Week with her performance.

Defensive Player of the Week

On the defensive side of things, Nebraska’s Briana Holman was up to par with her blocking. The senior middle blocker averaged 2.8 kills and 2.0 blocks per set on the week, pacing the Huskers with a .525 hitting percentage.

Holman was named as the Ameritas Players Challenge MVP after putting down 25 kills and 18 blocks. This is her first Defensive Player of the Week honor.

Setter of the Week

Minnesota’s Samantha Seliger-Swenson continued to lead the Gophers to an undefeated start. Seliger-Swenson dished out 126 assists for an average of 14.0 per set. She handed out a season-best 49 assists against Tennessee while also leading the team to a .396 hitting percentage.

This is Seliger-Swenson’s seventh Setter of the Week honor with her last coming on October 3, 2016.

Freshman of the Week

Taking over Lauren Carlini’s role, and as a freshman, Wisconsin’s Sydney Hilley dished out 116 assists for an average of 12.89 assists per set. Her setting guided the Badgers to a 3-0 week with wins over Syracuse, Arkansas and Kansas State.

Against Syracuse, Hilley put down a career-best four aces, while also averaging 2.00 digs and 0.67 blocks per set across all three matches. For the week, Hilley set the Wisconsin offense with a .433 hitting clip. This is the second honor for Hilley in her young career after receiving Setter of the Week on August 28.
