Agatha Bednarczuk/Eduarda ‘Duda’ Santos Lisboa of Brazil and the reigning champions, Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst of Germany have claimed their spots in the women’s finals of the 2017 FIVB World Tour Finals. The winner of the match with share $100,000 of the $800,000 prize.
Agatha/Duda downed the top seeded and fellow countrywomen, Larissa Franca and Talita Antunes in a quick 29-minute sweep 2-0, (21-12, 21-12). This has not been a good tournament for the #1 ranked women’s pair in the world, as they started pool play with a 0-2 record, but finding some momentum on day three as they powered through the Round of 12 and Quarterfinals. The third match of the day wore on the pair, making it easier for Agatha/Duda to perform better.
“It was our best match against them. We had played well before but this was definitely when our strategy worked the best,” said Duda.
The Brazilian winners will take on the reigning champions Ludwig/Walkenhorst who downed Sarah Pavan/Melissa Humana-Paredes 2-0, (21-15, 21-14). The pair served tough at the Canadian pair, putting Humana-Paredes under pressure in the back court.
“It’s a long season and we’ve had a lot of physical problems, but being able to play here in front of fans helps us a lot to keep going,” said Walkenhorst.
The finals will take place on Saturday, August 26 on court 1.
