Zenit Kazan and Berlin Recycling Volleys squared off in the CEV’s Match of the Week during the Champions League, with the Russian squad coming out on top. The Russian side won 3-1, (25-17, 25-20, 23-25, 25-23).

The match was a rematch of the semifinals last season when Kazan took the victory over the German team. Kazan remains in first place in Pool D with a 5-0 record while Berlin sits back in third place with a 2-3 record. Recently, Berlin fired their head coach, Luke Reynolds, and brought in Stelian Moculescu to take his place.

The first set was a struggle for the German side as Kazan scored 19 points to their 9. Maxim Mikhailov led the Russian side with 8 points scored in the first set alone. The second set was not much different as Kazan scored 19 to Berlin’s 10 points. The score was as close as they were in the first two based on Kazan’s service errors, committing 7 in the first and 9 in the second.

The third set was more evenly matched between the two teams, with Berlin making a comeback on Kazan to take the third 25-23. In another fairly even set, Kazan barely came out on top with a 25-23 win in the fourth to take the match.

Matt Anderson stepped away from the match with the most points scored with 20 while Mikhailov added 19. Wilfredo Leon posted 11 in the win as well. For Berlin, Paul Carroll was the team’s leader with 14 points while Graham Vigrass posted 12 of this own in the loss.
