Zenit St. Petersburg Ends Zenit Kazan’s 64 Match Win Streak

0 Carly DeMarque | November 24th, 2017 | News, Pro Indoor, Russian League

A two-year streak for Zenit Kazan was stopped this week in the Russian Men’s Superleague, as Zenit St. Petersburg stopped the Russian powerhouse’s 64 match win streak. Players like Matthew Anderson and Wilfredo Leon were not enough to keep the win-streak alive in Kazan.

Kazan started the match out with a 25-22 win to begin like any normal match but St. Petersburg stepped it up in the second set to tie things up at 25-19. The third set saw St. Petersburg with the lead the whole time. Kazan tied things up at 23-23 late, but St. Petersburg’s Alexander Butko put down an ace to go up 24-23 followed by a Drazen Luburic kill to win the set 25-23.

St. Petersburg seized the opportunity in the fourth set, taking the match 25-23 to end Kazan’s 64 match streak.

In the end, Luburic put down 20 points in the win for St. Petersburg along with Oreol Cameho’s 24. On Kazan’s side, it was a slow night for Anderson who put down just nine points while Leon added 20 in the loss along with Maxim Mikhailov’s 20.

Kazan still remains on top of the league following the win, but are now close to Belgorod who has one less match of play and could surpass them with a sweep over their next opponent. St. Petersburg is making a huge splash in this year’s Russian Superleague, as they were just formed this season, bulldozing their way through the competition so far to build an 8-5 record in the league to stay in third place.
