TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 15 Florida State volleyball team took down the TCU Horned Frogs on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 3rd) in the final match of the Home2 Suites by Hilton Tallahassee Seminole Invitational. The Seminoles went 2-1 in its home tournament, taking down UNC Asheville and TCU to earn second place in the tournament.

In the first set, the Seminoles’ offense came out swinging, hitting .519 through the set with 15 kills on 27 attacks and only one error. Both of the first two sets were dominated offensively by senior outside hitter Milica Kubura, who tallied six kills in each set.

As TCU’s offense began to click in the second set, it was a strong defensive effort from Florida State that helped the Seminoles win the set. With 28 digs – shared by eight different players – and three blocks in the set, the Seminoles held the Horned Frogs to a .151 hitting percentage.

When Kubura left the match with an injury, the FSU offense was able to keep up the momentum with a hitting percentage of .293 in the third set, and a strong defensive presence helped to keep the set close. TCU was able to get a lead on Florida State, fighting back defensively and outhitting the Seminoles to take the set.

The Seminoles finished it off by putting pressure on the net in the fourth set, hitting .393 with three team blocks. While the Horned Frogs were able to hold the Seminoles at match point for multiple points toward the end, Florida State was able to win 25-21 and take the match 3-1.

Quoting head coach Chris Poole

“I was really proud of this team today. Yesterday was extremely disappointing for all of us and the girls knew they did not perform well. It would have been easy to let down today as well, but the girls came out and played great the first set to get us started.

“When Mili had to leave the match in the second set we could have completely folded as a team. Instead we saw some great performances from them, and really everyone contributed to the win.”

Quoting junior defensive specialist Logan Holanchock

On what the team did to prepare for each match…

“In our first game against UNC Asheville we were really focusing on our own game, we knew that if we played well we would be successful. But we knew the next two teams were going to be a challenge, so when we watched film against Colorado State we tried to focus on their play as well as our own. We had to make sure we were able to be in position because of how strong their outsides are. After the loss we tried to focus on what went wrong, because if you don’t learn from a loss then it was pointless. I think we came back and did really well.”

Quoting junior outside hitter Christina Ambrose

On how tournaments like this help prepare the team for a tough ACC schedule…

“These games are nice because they’re good practice heading into ACC play. It’s nice to see what we have to work on and what we need to get better at, as well as what we’re good at. It gives us a good idea of what we need to do when we go back to practice to work on those things.”

Quotes of the Match
TCU Director of Volleyball Jill Kramer
Opening Statement
“This was a hard-fought match on both sides of the net. I really liked the way our team fought when we were down two sets. We hadn’t been in that situation before and there was still a lot of fight in them. It just comes down to us doing some things more consistently. On our side as a coaching staff, this is probably the most detailed scout we have given them and we started planning out some new things that none of them have done before. We had worked on it in practice a little bit, but we changed up some things we did defensively. We will learn those because we are going to have to do those at some point during match play. We are going to learn from those things and get better. It was really promising though and I saw a lot of really promising things in this match.”
