#2 Pepperdine Beach Opens With 2 Wins in Hawaii

HONOLULU, Hawai’i – The 2nd-ranked Pepperdine beach volleyball team stretch its winning streak to 16-consecutive matches with victories over Cal Poly and 6th-ranked Hawai’i at the Ching Complex on Friday afternoon.

The Waves opened the day with a 5-0 sweep over the Mustangs (10-13) before battling the Rainbow Wahine (18-5) for a 3-2 victory.  Pepperdine now holds a 17-1 overall record, with a 9-1 record against ranked opposition.

In the first match-up, the Waves won on all five courts, with the first four matches on courts two through five earned by straight-set victories and the win on one ending after a three-set battle.

Senior Sarah Seiber (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS/Arizona) and sophomore Kaity Bailey (Ojai, Calif./Villanova Preparatory School) began the winning ways in the No. 5-position for Pepperdine, as the pair defeated Dora Bellin and Holland Boege with a 21-13, 22-20 final mark to pull ahead early.

Sophomore Anika Wilson (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos HS) and freshman Deahna Kraft (Seattle, Wash./Garfield HS) then put the team in a position to clinch from the No. 4-slot, besting Brayden and Taylor Gruenewald with a 21-13, 21-17 final mark.

Pepperdine’s No. 3-pair Skylar Caputo (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) andHeidi Dyer (San Clemente, Calif./Saddleback Valley Christian HS) would do the honors for the Waves with the clinching 21-14, 21-15 victory over Raeann Greisen and Heather Pembroke.

With the match clinched, the final two positions went into action with No. 2-duo,graduate student Brittany Howard (Mountain View, Calif./Mountain View HS/Stanford) and junior Corinne Quiggle (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra HS) facing Taylor Nelson and Aidee Van Winden and the Waves’ No. 1-pair, senior Delaney Knudsen (Valencia, Calif./Valencia HS) and sophomore Madalyn Roh (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral HS) going up against Hannah Hubbard and Emily Sonny.

Quiggle and Howard won the first set 21-19 and then had to go point-to-point in the second en route to an impressive 37-35 second set victory to put the Waves up 4-0.  Roh and Knudsen fell in the first set, 18-21, but won the second 21-19 to send the match to a third.  The pair then quickly posted a 15-11 third set victory to complete the sweep for Pepperdine.

To start the second match, Pepperdine pulled ahead 2-0 early with wins on courts five and three, before the Rainbow Wahine amassed a victory on court four.  Then, the Waves No. 2-pair Quiggle and Howard clinched the match to make it 16-wins in a row for the Waves.

Bailey and Seiber took down Hannah Zalopaney and Amy Ozee with a 21-16, 21-17 final mark in the No. 5-position.  Dyer and Caputo then downed Emily Maglio and Laurel Weaver with a 21-14, 21-16 result to put the Waves in clinching territory once again.

Hawai’i then won the team’s first win of the day with a three-set battle on court four to make it 2-1 Waves and all eyes looking at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.

Howard and Quiggle commanded the court against Nikki Taylor and Ka’iwi Schucht, amassing a 21-18, 21-16 final score to clinch the overall dual for the Waves.  Hawai’i finished the day by taking court one in two sets to make it a Waves 3-2 final victory.

On the exhibition court, sophomore Nikki Lyons (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) and freshman Gigi Hernandez (Dana Point, Calif./JSerra Catholic HS) also played Hi’ilawe Huddleston and Cyrene Hertzog, winning the first set 21-11 and falling in the second 26-28 before the match was abandoned due to time constraints.
