#2 STANFORD DEF. #4 TEXAS 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 32-30)

#2 Stanford hosted #4 Texas in the first match of a home and home series to be played this week. The Cardinal swept the Longhorns Tuesday night. The series shifts to Austin, Texas, the Longhorns’ home turf on Friday.

Stanford scored the first eight points of the opening set, putting the Cardinal in the driver’s seat early. Stanford kept the pressure up in running away with the first set, 25-15. The Cardinal did a little bit of everything, hitting .500 on the attack without committing an error and adding five blocks and three aces, while forcing nine Texas errors.

In the second set, the two powerhouses traded punches. Stanford enjoyed its largest lead at 11-8, but Texas kept on the attack, and took the lead at 19-18. The Cardinal used a 3-0 spurt to move back in front and held off the Longhorns 25-22 to take a two sets to zero lead.

Texas gave Stanford all it could handle in the third, trying to avoid the sweep. The Longhorns and Cardinal went back and forth and it was Texas, who had numerous opportunities to force a fourth set, but ultimately could not. The Longhorns drew their first set point at 25-24, but a kill by Stanford outside hitter Kathryn Plummer evened the score again.

Texas would get four more set points, including at 30-29, but three straight kills from the Cardinal finished off the Longhorns.
