The 2018 West Coast Conference Beach Volleyball Championship kicks off on Friday in San Bruno, California, where 2nd-ranked nationally Pepperdine, and 2017 NCAA runner-up, will look for its third-consecutive WCC Championship. Last year, only 1 team from the conference advanced to the NCAA tournament, and with 19-12 Loyola Marymount ranked 15th in the country, that looks to be the case again this year.
Pepperdine has only played two WCC opponents this year, and on both occasions, the result was a 5-0 sweep. That came over tournament 2nd seed Loyola Marymount and 3rd seed Saint Mary’s, which makes Pepperdine significant favorites in this tournament. For the Waves, this will be more an opportunity to nail down their lineup before NCAAs, and a chance to get more experience playing on less-familiar sand after they went undefeated at their home Zuma Beach this season.
They’ve used two different pairs heavily this season at the #1 line. To start the year, Madalyn Roh/Brook Bauer occupied that spot and went 9-6. More lately, Corinne Quiggle and Deahna Kraft have been shifted up, going 5-4 in their 9 opportunities. The two teams are a combined 22-2 at the #2 line, so there’s little room for accusations of sloughing their better pair to gain an advantage – and more a question of which twosome is better prepared to play the elite in Gulf Shores in May.
Loyola Marymount vs. Saint Mary’s, the #2 vs. #3 matchup, is the most intriguing of the tournament. Loyola Marymount won both of the teams’ regular-season matchups, but that included Loyola Marymount pair McKayla Ferris/Savannah Slattery upsetting St. Mary’s top pair of Hughes/Rund in the first matchup. Ferris/Slattery are only 11-17 this year, while Hughes/Rund are 12-6 at the 1 line and 5-1 at the 2-line this season. After a three-set match, that result could easily swing the other way, and it did in the rematch, meaning that Saint Mary’s proved itself capable of winning on 3 different lines – just not in the same match.
Live results will be available at the Championship Central, linked above.

Just a small correction, if you will. LMU beat St. Mary’s both duels 3-2. McKayla Ferris/Savannah Slattery split the difference in the two meetings with Hughes/Rund.
Thank you sooooo much for putting the schedules/times out there. Not really easy to find elsewhere.
Thanks for the correction. Was trying to dance around the fact that nobody actually listed scores for the 2nd matchup.
